Be part of our pediatric training program
German Doctors e. V. is looking for pediatricians and physicians in pediatric residency training for the supervision and training of students during their first clinical rotation in hospitals in central Sierra Leone.
Duration: Deployment for 6 weeks or 3 months
Application: for the current calendar year, respectively

Project background
Sierra Leone, a country with a population of around 8 million, has a high under-5 mortality rate and a comparetively low number of doctors and healthcare professionals. Medical care in the West African country is provided mainly by community health officers and nurses, especially outside the capital Freetown.
Together with the Sierra Leonean Ministry of Health, a training program was launched in Sierra Leone in the fall of 2021 to provide graduates of the School of Clinical Sciences in Makeni with further training in various specialties in a 2-year program. A total of 3 NGOs, all of which have been working in Sierra Leone for years, accompany training programs with university-recognized bachelor's degrees in surgery, internal medicine or pediatrics.
German Doctors e.V. has been active in the training of health care workers in Sierra Leone for over 10 years and is co-responsible for the 2-year pediatric training course.
Description of deployment
For the supervision and training of the students during their first clinical rotation in hospitals in central Sierra Leone, experienced pediatricians or physicians in pediatric residency training are sought for deployments lasting 6 weeks or 3 months.
The hospitals are located in remote regions of the country and provide country typical medical care. The work in the hospitals is done in close cooperation with local physicians, often tropical physicians from Europe. The professional basis of the training is the national guidelines as well as the ETAT+ guidelines and recommendations of MSF and WHO. A medical program coordinator responsible for the pediatric program works on site and is the direct contact person for medical and organizational questions.

Requirements
Pediatrician with completed residency training or physicians in advanced pediatric residency willing to go for a 3-month assignment.
- Minimum 3 years of clinical experience
- Willingness to work in a country with significantly limited resources and in a remote location
- Completed ETAT+ course desirable
- Experience in clinical work in low resource settings desirable
- Teaching experience desirable
Compensation/Accommodation
For this voluntary deployment, part of the flight costs are generally reimbursed; board and lodging on site are free. Further information can be found here.
In the case of a 3-month deployment, German Doctors e.V. will cover the entire flight costs as well as necessary insurances for abroad; board and lodging on site stay free. The reimbursement of further costs (visa, malaria prophylaxis) can be applied for.
Sierra Leone is a politically stable country which allows excursions in the vicinity of the hospitals or on the Western Peninsula. The voluntary doctors can expect a stimulating environment and an interesting task.
